Warm your heart and soul with a bowl of soup for a good cause at the annual Empty Bowls of Owensboro event. On April 23, our community will come together for dinner and fellowship, admire the craft of our local artisans, and raise money to fight hunger.
When and Where
The event will be held at the Moore Center at Brescia University on Tuesday, April 23. It begins at 6 p.m. and runs until 8 p.m. The More Center is located at 717 Frederica Street, Owensboro, Kentucky 42301.
Tickets are available at the Brescia University’s Bearcat Corner. The shop is open Monday through Friday from 9 in the morning until 3 in the afternoon. Tickets are $16 each.
A Community Effort
All funds raised at the event will go to nearby food pantries, charities, and non-profits in an effort to raise awareness of the conditions that cause hunger. When you arrive, you may pick up a beautiful bowl, hand-crafted for this event by local artists and pottery students. Local churches, chefs, and other dedicated culinarians will provide a variety of delicious soups to fill your bowl. The offerings change from year to year, but there’s consistently a vegetarian soup on the menu. Amid the fun and fellowship, past recipients of the event’s funding will explain how that money has helped in their causes.
A History of Care
Empty Bowls is a nationwide movement that has spread love and care across the U.S. since 1990. The effort began as a fundraising project at a high school in Michigan, and quickly caught on near and far. Empty Bowls arrived in Owensboro in 2005 when Brescia arts and clay professor Steve Driver learned of the movement and decided to bring it into his own community. The first event is reported to have raised over $2,000 for 10th Street Baptist Church.
