About Waitress

Waitress follows the story of Jenna Hunterson, a pie chef at a southern diner who finds her life turned upsidedown by an unexpected pregnancy. Jenna works at Joe’s Diner and uses her pie baking to escape her abysmal life, often naming pies to reflect what’s going on in her life such as “The Key (Lime) to Happiness Pie” and “Betrayed By My Eggs Pie”. Her marriage is less-than-happy, and her world is further rocked by her unexpected pregnancy. She continues to work at Joe’s throughout her pregnancy and develops a close relationship with her OBGYN, Dr. Pomatter, who is also going through a rough patch. Waitress offers an inspiring story of turning your life around even in the bleakest circumstances.

Waitress Fun Facts

Waitress made Broadway history by having four women in the top four creative roles of the original Broadway production: book by Jessie Nelson, music and lyrics by Sara Bareilles, direction by Diane Paulus, and choreography by Lorin Latarro. This all-female team came together organically and shaped the show into the masterpiece that has stunned audiences across the world. In addition to its original Broadway run, Waitress has also enjoyed a U.S. national tour, a London West End production, a 2018 run in the Philippines, and a 2019 run in Buenos Aires with a 2020 Australian production, a 2020 Netherlands production, and a U.K. tour in the works.

For the original Broadway production, two Manhatten bakers were brought in to teach the cast how to crack eggs, sift flour, and roll out pie dough on stage to make the performance as realistic as possible, and pies were warmed and sold as audiences trickled into the theatre to help immerse audiences into the show.
